Narcissism of Small Differences

 

Whenever individuals or groups similar to each other accentuate even the smallest differences among them, the phenomenon referred to as "narcissism of small differences" is said to have occurred. This is because people have a tendency of feeling more advanced by showing off their minimal distinctions from others who resemble them. 

Consider two rival fans of the same team arguing over who the best player or coach is. Equally, two factions can differ on how certain rituals should be performed despite sharing common beliefs.

On social media, for example, people will try to be unique by highlighting uncommon interests. Politically, parties may target specific voters through slightly varying policies  .

What Freud meant when he coined this term was that it could be seen in communities that are close knit; although it fosters identification as well as group loyalty, too much emphasis leads into conflicts if not handled properly.

It is important for us to know the dangers posed by such behavior. A society which is inclusive should foster collaboration among its members instead  of magnifying their disparities.

In brief,"Narcissism of small differences" basically means making much of trifling distinctions in order to feel one’s self different from other people; and this usually results into hostility besides fostering solidarity among individuals. However, recognizing common ground helps bring peace within any community.
