A Captivating Journey Through History and Reflections - "Shahabnama" Review

Shahabnama is an autobiography written by a famous Pakistani author and diplomat Qudrat Ullah Shahab which gives us first hand account of the background to the Muslims’ struggle for independence in the sub – continent, which has led to the creation of Pakistan. This book provides a panorama of Shahab’s journey in life right from his early childhood days, when he became the first ever civil servant from Jammu and Kashmir , through his diplomatic career, as well as his understanding about political setting in Pakistan (because under different Pakistani politicians he played important diplomatic assignments) and his spiritual experiences.

One of the highlights of the book is Shahab’s unique style of writing that, for one thing, has a way of mesmerizing readers with its story telling. His personal odyssey, from childhood to becoming the first civil servant from Jammu and Kashmir to diplomatic activities in his tenure, offers insights into his distinctive experiences. Further insight can be gained about Pakistan through his comments on it as well as Pakistan’s politics.

However, it should be noted that “Shahabnama” contains some parts that may seem unbelievable or incomprehensible to some people. Some occasions clash with supernatural things and might question the reader’s sense of reality.

There is another thing  that some readers may find discomforting in the way this book seems to incline towards grave worship at times, which could be a bone of contention for people with different religious understandings or tastes.

On the whole, I give a three star rating (⭐⭐⭐) to “Shahabnama”. The best part of the book is its writing style which tells Shahab’s life story and his views on significant developments. Whereas it might be seen as controversial by some, this memoir still provides an invaluable insight into important period in history.
